Dana 30 vs. Dana 44 Gear Ratio Limits
If you drive a Jeep Wrangler Sport or Sahara, you have a Dana 30 front axle. As you increase the numerical gear ratio, the pinion gear physically shrinks. 5.13 is the absolute physical limit for a Dana 30 axle. At 5.13, the pinion gear is incredibly small. Best Gears for 35-inch Tires: 3.6L vs. 3.8L
- 2012-2018 JK (3.6L Pentastar): 4.56 gears are the undisputed sweet spot for daily driving, placing you right at 2,500 RPM at 70 MPH.
- 2007-2011 JK (3.8L V6): The 42RLE transmission has a steep overdrive. If upgrading from stock 3.21 gears, 4.88 to 5.13 gears are recommended for 35s. If you already have 3.73+ gears, 5.13s may be overkill for daily driving.
- 2018+ JL (3.6L/2.0T): The 8-speed automatic handles tires much better. 4.56 gears are perfect for 35s.

Installing new ring and pinion gears is only half the battle. To prevent immediate catastrophic failure due to overheating, you must follow a strict break-in procedure. New gears generate excessive heat as microscopic imperfections mesh together.
