3.6L vs 3.8L Jeep JK: Why Gearing is Completely Different

Asking a forum “What gear ratio do I need for 35s?” without specifying your JK’s model year is the most dangerous question you can ask. The 2007-2011 JKs and the 2012-2018 JKs look identical on the outside, but their internal drivetrain mathematics require entirely different re-gearing strategies.

The Grand Divide: Two Distinct Eras

In 2012, Jeep fundamentally changed the DNA of the Wrangler JK. They didn’t just add a bit more horsepower; they completely overhauled how that power is delivered to the axles. You cannot copy a successful gear ratio from a 2015 JK and expect it to work on a 2008 JK. If you do, your Jeep will either scream on the highway or fail to climb a gentle hill.

The Real Culprit: It’s the Transmission, Not Just the Engine

Everyone blames the early 3.8L engine (often called the “minivan engine”) for being sluggish. While it produces 83 less horsepower than the newer 3.6L Pentastar, the engine is only half the problem. The true villain is the 42RLE 4-speed automatic transmission bolted to it.

Let’s look at the actual internal gear ratios of the two automatic transmissions offered during the JK’s lifespan. Pay close attention to the Overdrive gears (the lowest number):

The 3.8L Era (2007-2011): The Gearing Nightmare

Look at the 4th gear overdrive on the older 42RLE transmission: 0.69:1. This is an incredibly “tall” gear. When the transmission shifts into 4th gear on the highway, it drops the engine RPMs like a rock. If you bolt on heavy 35-inch tires without changing your axles, your RPMs drop so low that the 3.8L engine produces virtually zero torque. The transmission will constantly “hunt” (shift back and forth between 3rd and 4th) just to maintain 65 mph.

The Gearing Rule for the 3.8L: Because the transmission’s overdrive is so terrible, you must run much numerically higher (lower) axle gears to compensate. You are fighting both a weak engine AND a bad transmission.

The 3.6L Pentastar Era (2012-2018): The Game Changer

In 2012, Jeep introduced the 3.6L Pentastar (285 HP) and paired it with a robust 5-speed transmission sourced from Mercedes-Benz. Notice the 5th gear overdrive is 0.83:1. This tighter ratio keeps the engine RPMs perfectly suspended in the meat of the powerband at highway speeds.

Because the transmission does such a great job managing power, you do not need extreme axle gears to turn heavy tires. In fact, putting 5.13 gears on a 2016 JK with 35s will cause the engine to scream at nearly 3,200 RPM at 70 mph—destroying your fuel economy and wearing out the engine.

  • 33″ Tires: 4.10 Ratio is perfect.
  • 35″ Tires: 4.56 Ratio for flat terrain / 4.88 for mountains.
  • 37″ Tires: 4.88 or 5.13 Ratio.

The Final Verdict

Stop comparing your rig to the Jeep parked next to you. If you have a 2007-2011 3.8L, you must gear deep (5.13 is your best friend for 35s) to overcome the transmission. If you have a 2012-2018 3.6L, the powertrain is much more forgiving (4.56 or 4.88 is the sweet spot for 35s).
