If you buy a 2.5-inch suspension lift and install it on a bare-bones stock JK Sport, you will likely yield over 3.5 inches of true lift. If you install that exact same kit on a heavily armored Rubicon with steel bumpers, a Warn winch, and a hardtop, you might only yield 1.5 inches of lift due to spring sag.
You cannot buy correct track bars, calculate driveshaft angles, or definitively know what size tire will clear your fenders until you know your True Suspension Lift Height.
Why Measuring from the Ground or Fenders is Wrong
The most common mistake owners make is measuring from the ground to the bottom of the fender flare to determine lift height. This method is fundamentally flawed because it introduces variables that have nothing to do with the suspension:
- Tire Pressure & Wear: A 35-inch tire at 35 PSI is taller than a 35-inch tire at 28 PSI. Worn tread reduces height.
- Fender Type: Factory flares sag over time. Flat aftermarket fenders sit higher on the body.
- Tire Size Changes: If you upgraded from 32s to 35s, your Jeep sits 1.5 inches higher off the ground, independent of the springs.
The FSM-Verified Measurement Method
To find your true suspension lift height, you must measure the fixed distance between the axle housing and the vehicle frame. These points do not change regardless of what tires or fenders you run.
1. The Front Axle Measurement Point
Park the Jeep on level ground. Look directly behind the front tire at the coil spring. You need to measure the vertical distance between two specific metal ledges:
- Top Point: The bottom edge of the upper spring perch (the metal cup attached to the frame where the yellow/black jounce bumper sits).
- Bottom Point: The flat metal surface of the lower spring pad (the metal shelf welded to the axle tube where the bottom of the coil spring rests). Do not measure to the plastic spring isolator; measure directly to the metal pad.

Move to the rear coil spring. Again, measure the vertical distance between the fixed metal perches:
- Top Point: The bottom edge of the upper spring perch (frame side).
- Bottom Point: The flat metal surface of the lower spring pad (axle side).
